Since the dawn of Hollywood, the pop culture world has been blessed with countless “it” couples. We’ve had Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli, Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio, Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III, and during the 1960s we had Sonny Bono and Cher. They were all everyone could talk about. They were talented. They were colorful. And they were totally in love…Until they weren’t.
Sonny and Cher were the power couple of the rock and pop era, and their professional and personal relationship pushed them to the height of Hollywood during their marriage. However, it seems as though their own TV show, 40 million record sales, and a love story to end all love stories just weren’t enough to keep them together. For years, we’ve wondered what really happened to break this “it” couple, and now we finally have our answer.
At 16 Years Old, Cher Dropped Out of High School, Moved to Los Angeles, and Met Sonny Bono
From a young age, Cherilyn Sarkisian knew that she wanted to be a star. She was a born performer, and while she suffered from overwhelming stage fright, she felt happiest when she was singing. So, she dropped out of high school when she was just 16 years old, moved to Los Angeles, and made it her mission to become Cher, the singing superstar.
Along the way, in 1962, Cher found herself in a restaurant in LA, where she met a man by the name of Sonny Bono. This first meeting was friendly and platonic, as Sonny was not only 11 years older than her, but also recently separated from his first wife. But what neither of them realized was that this was just the start of a very long and complicated love story that has left many of their fans perplexed.
It Was Love at First Sight for Cher, but Sonny Wasn’t Interested and Hired Her as His Housekeeper
Although they were initially strangers meeting for the first time, Cher has told Parade that “I swear to God, the moment I saw Sonny, everyone else in the room disappeared” and that “He was the coolest guy ever.” The budding songstress was not only attracted to his looks and his personality, but his career also intrigued her. At the time, Sonny was working as the assistant of renowned record producer Phil Spector.
In Cher’s eyes, it worked in her favor to get to know Sonny more. For a start, she was smitten by him. But she also knew that his contacts in the music industry could help her career. And when her housemates in Los Angeles kicked her out, Sonny offered her the chance of a lifetime to move in with him. But he made it clear that he wasn’t offering for her to live there as his guest; she was to be his housekeeper.
Cher Cooked and Cleaned for Sonny, but He Soon Realized That Her Voice Was Utterly Unique
When Cher moved into Sonny’s home to work as his housekeeper, he made sure to keep the boundaries intact. Cher confessed that one of the first things he said to her was that “I don’t find you very attractive” and he made it very clear that their relationship wasn’t romantic in the slightest. So, for a while, Cher stayed in the house while she cooked, cleaned, and did everything Sonny asked of her.
However, during this time, Sonny learned more about Cher and her dreams of becoming a singing sensation. And when he heard her sing he realized that she was blessed with an incredibly unique voice. He pitched Cher to his boss, Phil Spector, and she was ultimately given the chance to sing as a backup singer on many of his hit songs.
Before Too Long They Had Unofficially Got Married and Formed Their Own Singing Group
As Cher grew as a singer and performer, the relationship between Sonny and Cher also began to grow. They progressed from friends to lovers one night in 1963 when “we went to a movie, and Sonny kissed me.” And before we knew it, they had unofficially married themselves in a hotel room in Mexico on October 27, 1964.
With this marriage also came a professional bond, as Cher asked Sonny to stand alongside her as she fulfilled her dream of being a singer. As someone who suffered from awful stage fright, Cher felt truly confident with Sonny by her side. So, he would join her on stage and sing harmonies alongside her. And during these performances, Cher would always look to her husband for strength as she “sang to the people through him.”
To Begin With, Sonny and Cher Released Their First Singles Under the Name of Caesar & Cleo
With such incredible talent behind them and a bond that seemingly couldn’t be broken, Sonny and Cher were able to progress to a bonafide singing group. By late 1964, they had debuted their first few singles to the world. However, they released these songs under the stage name of Caeser & Cleo.
With new releases like “Love Is Strange”, “Let the Good Times Roll” and “Do You Wanna Dance?” under their belts, Sonny and Cher thought they would spark their careers and jump them into the realm of superstars. Unfortunately, these singles were poorly received and did nothing to kickstart a fan base. Thankfully, Sonny’s next song changed their lives in more ways than they could have ever imagined…
In 1965, the Couple Made Their Mark With Their First Hit Single “I Got You Babe”
After two years of singing back up and trying to make it on their own, Sonny and Cher finally hit the jackpot when Sonny wrote their hit single “I Got You Babe.” The catchy tune and the ever-apparent love between the two singers seemed to strike a chord with fans at home, and they quickly became the talented new kids on the musical block.
Almost overnight, Sonny and Cher became icons. They became an “it” couple who seemed to have it all, and the hit singles just seemed to keep coming after that. Unfortunately, this newfound fame and fortune didn’t have a positive effect on the couple. While they seemed perfect to the rest of the world, much was going on behind the scenes that was hidden from view.
As the World Saw Them as the Ultimate Power Couple, Cracks Began to Emerge in Sonny and Cher’s Relationship
After the success of “I Got You Babe”, it seemed as though Sonny and Cher were at the top of their game. Their names were out there. Their songs were gaining a huge amount of traction. And Cher’s eclectic style and fashion made her an icon both in the US and in the UK. But the more famous they became, the more they struggled to keep their relationship together.
In the past, Cher has noted that Sonny was largely in control of their relationship. She has stated that “Sonny made all the decisions. He was the one I relied on.” But he was getting more and more unreliable the more famous they got, and his ego started to get in the way of their love. In fact, Sonny allegedly had many affairs during this initial bout of fame.
When She Learned That He Had Cheated, Cher Quietly Broke It off With Sonny Without the World Knowing
While Sonny and Cher continued to put on a front that they were an “it” couple during this time, Cher learned of Sonny’s infidelities. And while she loved him more than anything, she didn’t want to be with someone who would break her trust like that. Now, she was put in a sticky situation. How would she break it off with him without ruining her career in the process?
In the end, the singer chose to end things quietly, behind closed doors. She continued to perform with Sonny and continued to play happy families with him – yet when they signed off for the night they lived very separate lives. But Sonny wasn’t happy without Cher in his life, and he decided to do everything he could to get her back.
Sonny Eventually Won Cher Back, They Got Married, and Even Welcomed a Child Into the World
The single life didn’t agree with Sonny, and he knew that another woman wouldn’t make him as happy as Cher did. So, he went back to her with a proposition. He wanted them to get married officially, and he wanted them to start a family. He promised that he would stop cheating on her and that he would turn his life around – because all he wanted was to be with her.
Cher knew that she had been hurt by her unofficial husband, but she also believed that he was willing to change. So, she agreed to officially marry him just a short while after she gave birth to their only child together, who they called Chastity Bono. They were both over the moon to have a family and to have their lives back on track, but this happiness wouldn’t last long.
Although Sonny and Cher Were Still Selling Millions of Records, They Began to Lose Fans in the Late ’60s
Although Sonny and Cher took a short hiatus to welcome their child into the world, they made sure that their return to the music world was strong and forceful. They wanted to pick back up where they left off, and they wanted to continue selling boatloads of records. But despite the fact that they booked sell-out concerts and tours, the world began to change in the late 1960s.
During this time, the ’60s revolution changed everything from fashion to music, and Sonny and Cher found themselves caught in the middle. They were deemed to be too conservative for this new generation of fans, and they slowly but surely began to lose their place in the music world. And to make matters worse, Sonny’s controlling behavior made the situation even more difficult.
The Music World Started to Change, and While Cher Was Open to These Changes Sonny Was Not
According to pop culture biographer Connie Berman, music fans of this era found that “the heavy, loud sounds of groups like Jefferson Airplane and Cream made the folk-rock music of Sonny and Cher seem too bland.” And while Cher was open to changing their sound, Sonny “didn’t like it – and that was that.” But their music wasn’t the only thing that left fans wanting more.
Although fans had previously fallen in love with the monogamous relationship of Sonny and Cher, the 1960s saw a romantic revolution that found monogamy uninteresting. And while they tried to keep on top of trends in other ways – like wearing bright, unisex clothes – their thoughts, opinions, music, and even their relationship was just too conservative for the liberal youths of America. They didn’t know what to do.
In an Effort to Make Themselves Current Again, Sonny and Cher Starred in a Movie Called Good Times
The fact that they were losing their younger fans wasn’t lost on Sonny and Cher, and because Sonny didn’t want to change their musical sound, they had to look in other directions. And so, in 1967, the couple made their mark in a musical comedy movie by the name of Good Times. They not only took on leading roles in this movie; they also produced it.
Unfortunately, the film was a total flop and was slated by critics across the globe. The screenplay was criticized, the production value supposedly wasn’t up to Hollywood standard, and Sonny’s role in the movie was considered awkward. The only saving grace was that many critics and fans who watched the movie were impressed with Cher’s acting talent.
Although Cher’s Talent Overwhelmed Sonny’s, He Pushed for Them to Stay Together as a Comedy-Singing Duo
Despite the fact that Good Times was a total flop, Cher’s talent was obvious, and the singer managed to bag herself a few more acting credits during the late 1960s. But they were small, and not enough to truly thrust her into the limelight. However, it seems as though this was enough to make Sonny jealous, and his ego couldn’t handle it.
Sonny could see that Cher was moving ahead of him in terms of her popularity and talent, so he wanted to keep them together. He pushed for them to rebrand themselves as the Vegas Duo, and they made their way to Sin City to perform both music and comedy on the stage. Although this new rebrand was slow and unsuccessful to start with, fans soon began to realize that they had a gift. And their popularity began to rise once again.
Sonny’s Risk Paid off, and They Were Ultimately Given the Chance to Have Their Own Television Show
After Sonny and Cher’s success in Vegas, they caught the attention of many big television networks – and they quickly were offered the chance of a lifetime. Executives wanted them to have their own comedy and music show, and in 1971 The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour was born. The show was initially booked for just six episodes, but fans once again fell in love with the relationship between them and so it was renewed for another four seasons.
The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour saw the couple welcome musical and comedic guests onto the stage, and their skits had fans singing along and laughing at the top of their lungs. And while this unique show seemed like the perfect addition to most fans’ TV watching habits, it seemed as though Sonny’s old habits came back out to play as their success once again grew.
As the Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour Took off, Sonny Once Again Took Complete Control of Their Life
It was clear to many fans that while Sonny was a major factor in Sonny and Cher’s success, it was Cher’s overall talent that drove them forward as a duo. And it’s been suggested that Sonny didn’t like this divide between them, which is why he once again took control over their personal and professional relationships.
Cher began to feel suffocated as the early ’70s continued, and while she was happy with their TV show and the music they were producing, she wanted the freedom to make her own decisions. But despite begging her husband for this freedom, Sonny continued to make every single decision about the show. And as if that wasn’t enough, he had begun to stray once again…
When Cher Learned That Sonny Was Cheating on Her Once Again, She Decided to Leave Once and for All
A few years earlier, Sonny had been very convincing when he promised Cher that he wouldn’t cheat on her again. However, it seems as though the pull of fame and fortune was just too much from him, and he entered into flings and relationships outside of his marriage once again. And just like last time, it wasn’t long before Cher found out.
Although she had once been happy in their married life with their child and family, the second round of cheating just proved to be too much for Cher. She decided to separate from him and to break off their marriage, and she knew that she had to move on. And while moving on personally wasn’t too much of an issue behind closed doors, moving on professionally was a whole different story.
Although They Separated in 1972, They Continued to Play Happy Families on TV for Another Two Years
During an interview with Parade, Cher admitted that “Stardom made Sonny a huge womanizer. One woman, or even five, was not enough for him. I found all this out afterward. I asked him, ‘How did you manage the logistics?’ I was trusting and faithful with him.” Alongside this, she also confessed that “The truth is, I’m not so sure we should’ve ever been husband and wife.”
Sonny and Cher separated behind the scenes in 1972, but to the rest of the world, they were still the “it” couple of the decade. Their show was still going strong, and their performances were so believable that nobody even suspected that they weren’t an item anymore. They continued to play happy families on television for another two years, but this wasn’t Cher’s decision at all. In fact, she was forced into it.
Sonny Threatened Cher When She Told Him She Wanted to Leave, Stating That Her Career Would Be Ruined
It’s been noted that Cher wanted to break up both their personal and professional relationships in 1972, but the reason they had to hold out for so long was due to the fact that Sonny gave her no choice in the matter. This has been confirmed in one of Sonny’s diary entries that has since become public. In this, he wrote, “The public still thinks we are married. That’s the way it has to be.”
Cher has also maintained that this was the case. When she told Sonny that she wanted to leave him and pause their dynamic duo, he threatened her and told her that the move would destroy her career. He allegedly said to her, “If you leave me, America will hate you and you won’t have a job.” For two years, Cher lived in fear of losing her job and so put on a show. But in the end, she just couldn’t take it anymore.
Although Cher Eventually Decided to Publicly Break Things off, Divorcing Sonny Wasn’t Part of Their TV Contract
In 1974, Cher fired back at her ex and figured that leaving him was worth risking her career. She told him that “You know what, Sonny? I just don’t care!'” and she officially made the move to divorce her husband. Unfortunately, it wasn’t an easy process. While Cher knew that she deserved more than a cheating husband, and she knew that she could amount to much more in her career without Sonny, they were stuck in a contract.
Cher had to wait until The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour was over before she could officially file for divorce. And she planned to do just that as soon as the last episode aired. By this point rumors of their separation had made their way into the public, and she was still intent on her decision. But she had no idea that, once again, Sonny would make it his mission to control her whole life…
Although Cher Planned to Divorce Sonny, Her Husband Made the First Move to File on His Own Terms
In an effort to make the first move, Sonny decided to get in before his wife to file the papers for their divorce. This was the ultimate power move on his part, and while Cher was certainly taken aback, she knew it shouldn’t stop her from taking her own claim. A week after Sonny filed in February 1974, Cher hit back with her own suit. And in this one, she claimed that Sonny had forced her to “involuntary servitude” during their marriage.
As if that wasn’t enough, Cher also claimed that Sonny held back her money and was in control of her finances. All she wanted was to be free from her marriage, but what ensued was bitter court proceedings. It took almost a year for the divorce to be finalized, and thankfully, Cher came out the victor. She was not only given custody of their child, but she was also free from any professional contract. So, she became Cher the solo act.
As Cher Reigned Supreme as a Solo Artist, Sonny Struggled to Keep Himself Relevant
Because Cher had never gone solo before, she was concerned about how the public would react to this new change of pace. But thankfully, it didn’t take her too long to settle into this new way of life without Sonny. Not only did she continue her musical career on her own through her solo show Cher, but her previous acting credits allowed her to make her way back into the movie world. Cher was on a roll, but the same couldn’t be said for Sonny.
Both Sonny and Cher had to reinvent themselves when they went solo, but Sonny realized quite quickly what he had been denying throughout their marriage; that Cher was the one who kept their fame afloat. Although he tried to maintain his place on television through his own show called The Sonny Comedy Revue, it was canceled after 13 episodes when viewers just couldn’t stand to watch it.
While Sonny Tried to Become an Actor, Fans Didn’t Want to Know Him Without Cher by His Side
Without Cher, Sonny was just a singer and actor who was struggling to truly make his mark on his own. He realized that fans didn’t like him as a solo artist and that his separation from Cher was actually doing the opposite to what he said to his ex-wife. Breaking up didn’t hurt her career. Instead, it hurt his own career.
In a last-ditch attempt to stay relevant, Sonny tried his hand at acting on Golden Girls and in Charlie’s Angels and Hairspray. However, each new acting credit came with a hefty negative review that left producers and casting agents reluctant to offer him any new opportunities. He was sliding out of Hollywood, while Cher was just climbing higher.
On Her Own, Cher Was Able to Build Her Own Brand and Showcase Her Solo Talent
While Sonny’s solo show hadn’t been a success, Cher’s solo show simply thrust her into the limelight even more. She was able to showcase all of her talents and welcome guests like David Bowie, Elton John, and Bette Midler. This allowed her an impressive entrance into the top-tier of Hollywood, and this allowed her career to grow even further.
In fact, the Los Angeles Times noted that “Sonny without Cher was a disaster. Cher without Sonny, on the other hand, could be the best thing that’s happened to weekly television this season.” But it seems as though this wasn’t the only thing that Cher had to be happy about. Just four days after finalizing her divorce from Sonny, Cher once again walked down the aisle.
In 1975, Cher Married Rockstar Gregg Allman Before Divorcing Him Nine Days Later
After she separated from Sonny, Cher found herself dating on and off. While some of these relationships were just flings, she seemed to find something special in the form of Gregg Allman – the founding member of The Allman Brothers Band. Gregg showed her what life as a rockstar was really like, and they tied the knot just nine days after Cher’s divorce from Sonny was finalized.
However, Gregg had his demons. As a rockstar through and through, he was abusing substances on a regular basis, and Cher struggled to cope with it. So, she decided to end things, just as she had done with Sonny all those years ago. But just like back then, Cher couldn’t seem to say goodbye completely, and so she welcomed Gregg back just a month later.
Cher and Gregg Got Back Together, but so Did Sonny and Cher for a Reunion of Their Popular Show
After reconciling a month later, Cher and Gregg decided to take their family to the next level. While Gregg promised to put his demons to rest, Cher decided to put her trust in him and they welcomed a son into the world. Elijah Blue was born on July 10, 1976, and they seemed like the perfect family. But when Cher was offered the chance to work with Sonny for a reunion of their popular show, she couldn’t turn it down.
In February 1976, The Sonny and Cher Show made its way onto screens once again. Cher had agreed to the reunion to maintain her place in the limelight, but a show hosted by the former couple didn’t provide what the fans wanted. Both Sonny and Cher took part in banter back and forth about their divorce, and they even talked about Cher’s high-profile marriage to Gregg.
Due to Gregg’s Substance Abuse and His Jealousy, Their Marriage Finally Broke Down in 1978
The reunion show was eventually canceled a year later as ratings began to dwindle, but by this time rumors about Gregg and Cher’s marriage had already made their way into the press. According to reports, Gregg had never wanted his wife to go back on the show with her ex-husband and was incredibly jealous that she was spending so much time with Sonny.
This, coupled with substance abuse, caused their marriage to crumble around them. Cher and Gregg divorced in 1978, and they parted ways for good. This gave Cher the chance to truly focus on her life, her children, and her career without any distractions. And while many thought that she might get back together with Sonny, her former partner had ultimately made a decision about his place in the limelight.
After the Failure of Their Reunion Show, Sonny Tried His Hand In the World of Politics
When Sonny realized once and for all that even a reunion of the show that made him famous wouldn’t help his career, he decided to leave Hollywood. He retired from acting and music altogether and chose to open up a restaurant with the money he earned while in the limelight. This lasted a short while before he was eager to try something new again.
During the late 1980s, Sonny made his way back into the public eye once again when he chose to dip his toe into the world of politics. In fact, he was the mayor of Palm Springs, California, from 1988 until 1992, and he seemed to enjoy this new side of fame. After his mayoral term ended, he later became a Republican congressman for California. Unfortunately, he didn’t get to enjoy this new role for long.
In 1988, the World Was Shocked to Learn That Sonny Bono Had Passed Away in a Tragic Accident
While Sonny Bono was in the midst of his political career, the world learned that he had been involved in an accident. He passed away on January 5, 1998 while on a skiing trip at the Heavenly Mountain Resort in South Lake Tahoe in California. After hitting a tree on the slopes, Sonny sadly passed away from his injuries.
After his passing, his fourth wife, Mary Bono, suggested that her husband had been under the influence while he was skiing. She noted that Sonny had been addicted to prescription medication and that she believes he took them on the day of his death. This has not been confirmed by the authorities, but it shook the world and many looked to Cher for a response to the news.
While Cher Knew It Was Right to Part Ways With Sonny, She Was Sad to Learn of His Passing
Although Sonny and Cher had a turbulent professional and personal relationship, Cher agreed to attend the funeral of Sonny Bono. In fact, she even accepted Mary Bono’s offer to read out his eulogy in front of his friends and family. It was a tough moment for Cher, and it’s been suggested that she was conflicted. On the one hand, she had lost someone who had once been very close to her.
However, their marriage had been tough, and Sonny had been incredibly unfaithful to her over the years. In the end, his infidelities were too much for her to bear. Cher has noted that “Of all the people who have known me well. Sonny knew me the least” and that “The truth is, I’m not so sure we should’ve ever been husband and wife.” We guess some stories don’t always have a happy ending.
Although Sonny Sadly Passed Away, He Had Remarried and Welcomed a New Family Before His Tragic End
Although Cher had stolen a huge part of his heart when he was younger, Sonny wanted to reinvent himself when he left Hollywood behind in search of a more normal life. And after his divorce from Cher, he actually married another two times. First, to Susie Coelho from 1981 until 1984, and then to Mary Bono, who he married in 1986.
He was married to Mary throughout his political career, and he even welcomed a whole new family into the world. The couple had two kids together, Chesare Elan in 1988 and Chianna Maria in 1991, and finally, Sonny felt like he had some kind of normality in his life. He loved his family unit, and for a while, Cher became a distant memory.
Cher Also Utilized Her Time Away From Sonny to Focus on Her Children and Family
Divorcing Sonny Bono was a huge step for Cher personally, professionally, and indeed financially. And with him out of the picture she could truly focus on the most important thing in her life; her children. While Sonny and Cher had a strained relationship after they parted ways, they did work together to raise the child that they shared together.
And even after Cher’s divorce from Gregg Allman, she maintained civil relationships with both of the fathers of her children to be the best mother she could possibly be. And many of her fans will say that she succeeded in this role, as both of her kids have now grown up to be strong, independent members of the community – and they’re also famous themselves!
Cher and Sonny’s Child Had a Close Relationship With Both Parents Growing Up
Despite the fact that Sonny and Cher had bad blood between them, they didn’t want this to push a wedge between them and their child. They had welcomed a child by the name of Chastity, who identified as a girl at the time. Chastity had an incredibly close relationship with both Cher and Sonny, even though they were struggling with their identity.
In fact, Chastity would often be spotted out and about with Cher and Sonny, and it seemed as though they all had their own relationships with each other. The world was intrigued to learn more about Chastity as well, as they had seen the child on their TV show back in the 1980s. And it was this fame that outed one of Chastity’s biggest secrets.
Sonny and Cher’s Only Child Came Out as a Transgender Man and Legally Changed His Gender and Name
In 1995, Chastity Bono was outed by the press for being a lesbian. But years later, we learned that there was more to the story than we knew. Sonny and Cher’s only child noted that “as a child, I always felt there was something different about me.” And from 2008 until 2010, Bono underwent a female-to-male gender transition.
In May 2010, Bono legally changed his name to Chaz Bono and legally changed his gender. This came as a shock to much of the world, but many of Cher’s fans were over the moon that her son was finally able to embrace who he really was. And of course, Cher is extremely close with her son and has been a proud advocate of the LGBTQ+ community for decades. But Chaz isn’t Cher’s only son.
Elijah Blue Allman Followed In His Mom’s Footsteps and Is Now a Famous Musician
Chaz Bono’s half-brother is Elijah Blue Allman, who was welcomed into the world while Cher was with the rockstar Gregg Allman. And while it’s been suggested that he’s not quite as famous as Chaz due to the fact that his father wasn’t as famous as Sonny Bono, it’s amazing to see that Elijah has followed in both his mom and dad’s footsteps.
In fact, Elijah is known professionally as P. Exeter Blue and has made a huge name for himself in the music world. After being given his first guitar by Kiss legend Gene Simmons, Elijah is now the lead vocalist, guitarist, and lyricist of a metal band by the name of Deadsy. And just like his mom is proud of him, he’s also super proud of his mom.
Since Sonny Bono and Gregg Allman, Cher Has Found Love In the Arms of a Variety of Very Different Men
Although Cher has devoted much of her life to her career and her children, that doesn’t mean that she has left the idea of romance behind her. Cher has fans lining up in their thousands to date her, and she’s become one of the most iconic and beautiful women the showbiz industry has to offer.
But it’s fair to say that Cher has built up a reputation for dating the unexpected. She has been linked to people we never thought she’d date, and this is just another one of the many reasons why fans love her. Cher does what she wants and she dates who she wants, and who could forget her infamous relationship with the one and only Tom Cruise?
In the Past, Cher Dated the Likes of Tom Cruise, Richie Samora, and Michael Bolton
When Cher and Tom Cruise started dating in 1985, the world went wild. The two starlets were not only some of the most famous people in the world, but they were also the most desirable – but they managed to find their way to each other. They first met at Madonna and Sean Penn’s wedding, and despite the fact that Tom was just 23 while Cher was 38, they dated for a little while.
Cher has since noted that Tom Cruise was in the top five of people she’s ever dated – and she’s dated a lot of people. She’s been tied to the likes of rockstar Richie Sabora, Tom Cruise’s Top Gun co-star Val Kilmer, Kiss’s Gene Simmons, and Michael Bolton. And, of course, we can’t forget Sonny. But Cher has recently spoken out about the true love of her life.
While Many Hope That Sonny Was the Love of Cher’s Life, She Has Confessed That This Isn’t True
Cher has certainly had no shortage of boyfriends over the years, but her relationship and marriage to Sonny Bono stand out above the rest. Because of this, many hope that Sonny was the love of Cher’s life, and newspapers and magazines have asked her this question outright on numerous occasions. Unfortunately, fans didn’t receive the answer they were hoping for.
When asked by The Guardian who her true love really was, Cher noted that there were two men who truly stole her heart. She confessed, “Well, I think Robert [Camilletti] and Gregory Allman.” This came as a surprise, as most people forgot that she dated Rob, an aspiring actor who worked in a bagel shop part-time. Cher was 40 when she started dating the 22-year-old, but it seems as though he had something no other man had; her heart.
Despite the Fact That Both Sonny and Cher Moved On, Fans Can’t Forget Their Incredible Chemistry
In the grand scheme of things, Sonny and Cher’s relationship wasn’t that long when you look at their other marriages and relationships. Both of them moved on fairly quickly after their divorce and they even welcomed more children. However, there was something about them that clicked with fans at home, and they can’t forget about their incredible chemistry.
Of course, this is probably due more to the fact that they climbed to the top of the fame ladder as a couple. And whenever anyone hears the iconic song “I Got You Babe” they instantly think of the power couple. Because of this, both Sonny and Cher will be linked together until the end of time – even though they broke things off decades ago.
Today, Cher Is Still Singing but Focusing On Different Projects To Keep Her Busy
Sonny and Cher will always be names we see written together, but there’s no doubt about the fact that Cher has also thrived on her own – and she still is today. While she’s not making as much music as she used to, she’s still performing and still considered to be the “Goddess of Pop.” But now she’s focusing on different projects.
In recent years Cher has worked on movies like Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again and Bobbleheads: The Movie, and she’s also had the pleasure of being the subject of a Broadway show called The Cher Show. As if that wasn’t enough she’s written books and released fragrances, and become a philanthropist. She’s still Cher without Sonny, but Sonny was a big part of her life – despite everything that went on between them.
