When we think of Yeezy, we don’t naturally think of sustainability. There are rumors floating around that suggest that Kanye is turning Yeezy more sustainable and environmentally conscious. As more brands and designers, as well as consumers, become more aware and conscious of their impact on the climate crisis, the industry must make changes.
Making A Change
There are brands that have already become fur-free, switched to vegan leather, looked at alternative materials and changed some of the production processes. Some brands are not only switching materials and practices but are also encouraging upcycling, repairing damaged clothing or even renting clothes!
The fashion industry is a huge contributing factor to climate change and does require more immediate action. People are starting to make some changes, and we’re on board, but we need more and quicker.
Kanye’s Great Plan
When discussing the changes in Kanye’s apparel line, he has strongly hinted at sustainability being a part of the new direction. Kanye has spoken about the different environmental ventures he is currently working on. He apparently wants to go ‘seed to sew’, investing money into his property in Wyoming to create a fiber farm. As Kanye explained “We’re building farms here, because of the climate and because of the soil, that has hydroponic cotton, wheat, hemp… We gotta sustain, right?”
Yeezy has already started with sustainable footwear. It is super experimental and is made from the ocean organism, Algae. They haven’t been released yet but we are keen to see what they feel like to wear. We keep picturing them a bit slimy… but surely not! Maybe Yeezy’s shoes were inspired by the Adidas sneakers that were made out of ocean plastic, or other brands doing similar stuff.
Tackling Other Issues Too
We hope with these changes that Kanye is also taking on other issues like trying to be carbon neutral, cruelty-free and ensuring fair trade. These are all important factors of sustainability and the fashion industry that most brands just simply ignore because they can.
The other part of Kanye’s grand plan that we are loving is his plan to bring manufacturing to America and employ former inmates, providing them a second chance. Both he and his wife Kim K have been active and passionate in their work with inmates and prison reform. Providing job opportunities would be pretty amazing for these people who have a hard time finding work once they are released. Not only does this help society, but it also makes his prototyping and production timelines shorter. We have no problem with a double-sided win!
We don’t know any other details, or how far along Kanye is in these changes and developments but we hope its underway and that we will see some cool things happening soon. Maybe his next New York Fashion Week show will be sustainable too! Stay tuned for more environmental Kanye news.
