These LGBTQ+ Couples Must Have Slipped Under the Radar Because We Didn’t Even Know They Were Together

Tue May 31 2022

Love is love, and nothing makes us happier than seeing our favorite celebrities settle down with someone who loves them for them. They quickly become #couplegoals, we follow their every move on social media, and we keep up to date on their loved-up vacations, date nights, and even their Sunday morning trips to the farmer’s market. And while many LGBTQ+ couples love to show off their love online, there are others who prefer to keep things low-key…

If you, like us, love to keep up with the comings and goings in Tinseltown, you might be surprised to learn that some of the biggest names in the LGBTQ+ community are loved-up and ready to settle down. And while we have absolutely no idea how these gay couples managed to slip under the radar, we’ve since done our research and pooled together the most iconic LGBTQ+ couples in Hollywood. After all, these power couples deserve their chance to shine.

Kevin McHale and Austin P. McKenzie

Glee fans will remember Kevin McHale take on the role of Artie Abrams in the all-singing, all-dancing TV show – and theater fans may know Austin P. McKenzie for his role as Melchior in the Broadway revival of Spring Awakening. But what you might not know is that these two have been together since 2016, after they met on the set of the miniseries When We Rise.

Interestingly, these two started dating two years before McHale publicly came out as gay. In April 2018, he decided to set the record straight with a hilarious tweet about Ariana Grande’s new song ‘No Tears Left to Cry.’ He wrote: “#NoTearsLeftToCry is gayer than me and I ACCEPT. Ty @ArianaGrande.” He then followed up with the tweet with another that read, “I’d like to request a remix with @JanetJackson. ty for ur time.”

Heather Matarazzo and Heather Turman

Heather Matarazzo is perhaps best known for her role in The Princess Diaries franchise, and while she’s publicly stated that she’s struggled to maintain her place in the limelight, it seems as though she always has her wife to rely on when she’s struggling. Heather has been married to her wife – who is incidentally also called Heather – since 2018. However, Matarazzo didn’t “come out” like many other celebs on this list.

Heather has confessed from a young age that she knew she was attracted to girls, but that she didn’t really know what that meant until she worked on Welcome to the Dollhouse when she was 11 years old. She’s stated that “Being able to find out that I wasn’t terminally unique and I wasn’t some weird freak, I was like, ‘Oh, this has a name. It has a name.”

G Flip and Chrishell Stause

In May 2022, Selling Sunset‘s Chrishell Stause shocked the world when she attended the show’s reunion episode. Although everyone expected her to talk about her on-screen feuds, her ex-husband and The Young and the Restless star Justin Hartley, and her recent relationship with her boss, Jason Oppenheim, she actually revealed that she was in a new relationship. And her new boo was Australian musician G Flip.

G-Flip is non-binary and goes by they/them pronouns, and fans were eager to know more about their relationship. Chrishell noted that the couple first met on the set of G-Flip’s “GET ME OUTTA HERE” music video, and confessed that “I know that some of you won’t understand this or agree with this but for me, it is about the person. It is about their heart. And yes, there’s that part of you that’s like, what you’re attracted to, but for me, I am attracted to masculine energy and I don’t really care what the physical form is.”

George Takei and Brad Takei

You don’t have to be a Star Trek fan to know that George Takei is an icon in Hollywood. His sexuality was long considered to be an open secret amongst his fans during his stint on the popular sci-fi series, but it wasn’t until 2005 that he confirmed the rumors. Not only that, but he also confirmed during this “coming out” interview that he had been with his partner, Brad Altman, for 18 years.

Takei decided to finally reveal his relationship status in 2005 after then-California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger wanted to veto same-sex marriage legislation. He noted that “It’s not really coming out, which suggests opening a door and stepping through. It’s more like a long, long walk through what began as a narrow corridor that starts to widen.” George and Brian married in September 2008, and they have been in love ever since.

Dylan Meyer and Kristen Stewart

Although everybody remembers Kristen Stewart for her high-profile relationship (and subsequent break-up) with her Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson, this actress is now engaged to her girlfriend of 3 years, Dylan Meyer. Kristen first opened up about her bisexuality in 2017, and she noted that “You’re not confused if you’re bisexual. It’s not confusing at all. For me, it’s quite the opposite.” Kristen is proud of her sexuality, and she’s proud of her relationship.

However, there was a time when Kristen was told to keep her relationship private. She was reportedly warned not to be public with her girlfriend so that she could maintain her ability to be cast in mainstream roles, but she decided that she wasn’t going to take their advice. While Kristen and Dylan tend to keep away from the limelight, that’s just because they prefer to showcase their love on their own terms.

Denis O’Hare and Hugo Redwood

Known for his roles in TV shows like True Blood, American Horror Story, and The Nevers, Denis O’Hare has become somewhat of an LGBTQ+ icon. He’s played gay characters and even trans characters in the past, but what many people don’t realize is that he’s also openly gay in real life. He noted that “I came out in the 1980s and it wasn’t fun and it wasn’t easy, but it was right. I will never live a lie.”

He met his now-husband online in 2000, they tied the knot in 2011, and the actor and designer couple have since opened up their family to their son. Denis is extremely proud of his family, and he told Out Magazine that “Getting married was a political act because so many people fought so hard for it. Also, every time I say the word “husband” and somebody flinches, I am helping to teach society this is the way it will be. This is the way it is.”

Antoni Porowski and Kevin Harrington

As one of the five experts on the iconic show Queer Eye, Antoni Porowski is a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community – and while many assume that he’s 100% gay, Antoni has stated that that’s not the case. He describes his sexuality as “a little more fluid along the spectrum,” and he actually prefers not to label himself one thing or another. He’s largely dated men, though, and he’s currently in a committed relationship.

Since 2019, Antoni has been dating New York-based strategic planner Kevin Harrington – and it seems as though fans can’t get enough of them. The couple started dating just before the first major coronavirus lockdown when Antoni was filming Queer Eye in Austin. Kevin decided to visit his new beau, but that’s when “It came to a shutdown in New York…and we decided to stay in Austin and fostered a dog. We went from being in a relationship and each having our own apartments and not having a dog, to living in the same place with a dog.”

Alexandra Hedison and Jodie Foster

Jodie Foster made her mark on the bright lights of Hollywood when she was just a child – but unlike other child stars, she hasn’t disappeared into oblivion. Instead, Jodie has maintained her place in the spotlight, and she’s had her photographer partner by her side for the past 9 years. Jodie and Alexandra Hedison married in 2014, a year after they started dating, but Jodie wasn’t always loud and proud about her sexuality.

The legendary actress has noted that she was actually a “closeted” lesbian while filming one of her most famous roles in The Silence of the Lambs. She decided to be a bit more open about her sexuality during the late ’00s, although she reportedly tends to shy away from using words like “lesbian” or “gay” when talking to the press.

Noah Galvin and Ben Platt

After making his mark in the world of musical theater, actor and singer Ben Platt seamlessly transitioned into the world of Hollywood – and now he’s known for putting his name to movies and shows like Pitch Perfect, Dear Evan Hansen, and The Politician. During the early stages of his newfound fame, Ben didn’t address rumors about his sexuality. However, he came out to his family when he was 13, and publicly came out in 2019.

Shortly after publicly coming out to the world, Ben started dating fellow actor and singer Noah Galvin. In fact, when Ben left his titular Broadway role in Dear Evan Hansen, Noah took his place! The couple have been loved-up ever since, and they often post adorable photos of them and their cuddly pooch on social media for all of their fans to gush over.

Simon Halls and Matt Bomer

Matt Bomer is a hugely popular actor, and while his fans love watching his projects as soon as they hit the big screen, it seems as though Matt prefers to keep his personal life away from prying eyes. A prime example of that was when Matt married his husband, publicist Simon Halls, a year before he actually came out as gay. The couple tied the knot in 2011, but he didn’t publicly announce their marriage until 2014.

Keeping things private and more low-key seems to work perfectly for this LGBTQ+ couple – and even their wedding was super casual. Bomer stated that his New York City wedding “was very chill and very small – just our closest and dear ones. There is a security, a validity. It’s just a feeling, I think – something about saying vows in front of the people around you who love and support you. I think it was good for our family.” The married couple has since welcomed three kids into the world.

Alex Sykes and Wanda Sykes

The comedian, actress, and writer Wanda Sykes grew up in a very conservative household – and so she “repressed” her sexuality for many years. She was even married to a man from 1991 until 1998, and it wasn’t until she was 40 years old that she finally had the courage to tell her parents that she was gay. However, in 2008 she decided that she couldn’t hide herself any longer, and she publicly came out as a lesbian at a same-sex marriage rally in Las Vegas.

Although her fans didn’t realize it at the time, Wanda was actually married to a woman when she publicly came out to the world. A month earlier, she had married Alex Niedbalski, who she had been dating since 2006. Sadly, her parents refused to attend the wedding because they struggled with their daughter’s sexuality, but it’s been noted that they have since come to accept their daughter, her daughter-in-law, and their two grandchildren.

Beanie Feldstein and Bonnie Chance Roberts

Beanie Feldstein is a face many people know for her roles in movies such as Booksmart and Lady Bird, and for her Broadway appearances in Hello, Dolly! and Funny Girl. But what some people don’t realize is that Beanie Feldstein is actually the sister of fellow actor Jonah Hill, and that she’s part of the LGBTQ+ community. Yes, Beanie identifies as queer – and she’s been in a relationship with her girlfriend for years.

Beanie met English producer Bonnie Chance Roberts on the set of How to Build a Girl back in July 2018, and it wasn’t long before they made their relationship official. In an adorable Instagram birthday message to her girlfriend back in December 2018, Beanie wrote “she’s the brightest, silliest, warmest, most loving woman and I can’t believe she’s mine.” They’ve been together ever since.

Jonathan Bennett and Jaymes Vaughan

When Jonathan Bennett played the Mean Girls heartthrob Aaron Samuels, he hadn’t come out as gay to the world – but he’s since confessed that he had come out to his co-star. Jonathan and Daniel Franzese (who played Damian in the movie), were “sharing in our little private misery of having to be in the closet. We definitely confided in each other.” Jonathan later came out in 2017 and announced he was in a relationship at the same time.

Jonathan has been with Amazing Race contestant and Celebrity Page host Jaymes Vaughan for many years now, and they took their relationship to the next level in March 2022 when they got married in Mexico. Bennett told TODAY after their wedding that “It was honestly a dream wedding! We kept having to stop and remind ourselves that we weren’t on a movie set, but this was actually our real life. If you had told me this was one of my Hallmark movie sets, I would have believed it. It was that perfect.”

Sean Hayes and Scott Icenogle

For many Will & Grace fans, Sean Hayes will always be Jack McFarland. This role not only thrust the actor into the limelight, but it also gave him the chance to give a gay character a voice in one of the biggest shows of that era. Sean is also gay in real life – but he actually refused to discuss his sexual orientation for many years because he wanted his fans to be more open-minded about the characters he played on the big screen.

In 2010, though, he seemingly confirmed that he was gay, telling The Advocate that “Really? You’re gonna shoot the gay guy down? I never have a problem saying who I am. I am who I am.” A few years later, in 2014, Sean announced to the world that he had married his long-term partner, Scott Icenogle. Although they keep their marriage low-key, they often post about each other on social media.

Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor

Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor are both legends in the acting field, but fans couldn’t believe it when the two icons were romantically linked back in 2015. It was suggested time and time again that these two were in a relationship – but neither of them confirmed or denied it. In fact, they kept pretty schtum on the matter until Paulson appeared on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen in 2019, where she revealed that Holland had actually slid into her DMs…

In another interview, Sarah also spoke about their “unconventional” relationship and the 32-year age gap between them. “I do not want to be defined by who I share my bed, my home, my soul with…It’s complicated, because there is a lot of hate in this world, and a lot of good can come from quote-unquote normalizing something for people who don’t see it as normal. Our relationship represents a certain amount of hope and risk. Maybe there’s something brave in it. Maybe it encourages others to make brave choices. What else can I say? We love each other.”

Rafa Olarra and Luke Evans

Although Luke Evans and Rafa Olarra sadly broke up in 2020, we had to include them on this list – as there was once a time when fans were overjoyed by their relationship. They were considered to be gay icons, even though Luke is less eager to talk about his sexuality nowadays. When he was younger and living in his home city of London, he noted that “everybody knew me as a gay man, and in my life in London I never tried to hide it.”

Now that Luke is more famous and a staple in Hollywood, he tries to keep his personal life shielded from view. He’s stated that “Talent, success, what you do in your personal life – I don’t see how one should have an effect on the other.” That’s why fans were over the moon when he started to share his relationship with Argentine art director Rafa on social media. Sadly, their relationship only lasted a year.

Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli

Orange is the New Black not only gave Samira Wiley to break through the hustle and bustle of Hollywood to make a name for herself, but it also gave her the chance to meet her now-wife, Lauren Morelli. Although Lauren had previously been married to a man, the Orange is the New Black writer publicly came out as a lesbian in 2014 and confirmed her relationship with Samira not long after.

The couple tied the knot in 2017, and since then their family has grown with the addition of their daughter, George Elizabeth in 2021. Samira has spoken out about their relationship in the past, stating that “So much of falling in love with Lauren was her own coming-out story. For the first part of our relationship, it was more of a confidante kind of relationship where she was having lots of questions about who she was.”

Ali Krieger and Ashlyn Harris

Many LGBTQ+ people in the public eye find love in the form of those who aren’t famous, and those who live a relatively normal life – but not Ali Krieger and Ashlyn Harris. These two ladies are both professional soccer players, and they both play for NJ/NY Gotham FC. They’ve since become a sporting LGBTQ+ power couple, after going public with their relationship when they got engaged in 2019.

They tied the knot on December 28, 2019, in Miami, and just a few months later they announced that they had adopted a two-day-year-old daughter they called Sloane Phillips. They’ve confessed that they often get “ignorant” comments about their family, with Harris noting that “It makes you feel like you’re not going to be able to provide the same things for your child that a ‘normal,’ whatever society views [as] normal, home looks like. But what we know and what we lean into is that we’re creating such a loving environment for Sloane every single day. She is going to know love in its best form.”

Christine Marinoni and Cynthia Nixon

She’s a Sex and the City icon, a politician, a mother, and a true champion for gay rights. Yes, Cynthia Nixon wears many stylish hats – and she even gets to call herself the wife of education activist Christina Marinoni. These lovebirds first met in 2004 at a gay rights rally, and they tied the knot in 2012, just a few months after the couple welcomed their son Max Ellington into the world.

In 2007, Cynthia spoke about her sexual identity in a candid interview that gave fans an insight into her life. She stated that “I don’t really feel I’ve changed. I’d been with men all my life, and I’d never fallen in love with a woman. But when I did, it didn’t seem so strange. I’m just a woman in love with another woman.” Amazingly, Cynthia and her family are supported by everyone around them – and they even attend an LGBT synagogue.

Lance Bass and Michael Turchin

During his stint in the all-American boyband N*SYNC, Lance Bass had men and women around the world fawning over him. And while most people assumed that he was heterosexual, he came out as gay in a cover story for People magazine in 2006. In his interview, he stated that “The thing is, I’m not ashamed – that’s the one thing I want to say. I don’t think it’s wrong, I’m not devastated going through this. I’m more liberated and happy than I’ve been my whole life. I’m just happy.”

Four years later, he met his now-husband, Michael Turchin, at a birthday party in Palm Springs. The rest, as they say, is history. Lance stated that the moment he set eyes on Michael “I knew I wanted to get to know him,” and in 2013 he even asked Michael to marry him. They tied the knot in 2014 and in October 2021 the couple became fathers to twins.

Georges LeBar and RuPaul

“If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else?” is RuPaul’s catchphrase – and it seems as though he has managed to find self-love in his life, as he’s been hopelessly in love with his husband Georges LeBar since they first met in 1994. They tied the knot in 2017, but what you might not realize is that RuPaul and Georges actually have an open marriage.

RuPaul told Vanity Fair that “I wouldn’t want to put restraints on the person I love the most on this planet. Listen, if you get something that you cannot resist and that is gonna make you happy, go for it. Because the truth is, I know in my heart of hearts like I’ve ever known anything before, that man loves me more than anything else in this world.” Yes, that setup seems to work perfectly for them.

Jennifer Cheyne and Jane Lynch

Whether you know her as the hard-nosed cheerleading coach in Glee or for her work on Two and a Half Men, it’s fair to say that Jane Lynch is a legend in the game. And while Jane knew from an early age that she was attracted to women, she often struggled with her sexuality. She stated that “It was almost like I had a disease I had been diagnosed. I had a journal and I remember I wrote, ‘I am gay. No one can ever know this.’ And I went four blocks away and threw it out in somebody else’s garbage. It led to a life of secrecy that I had to unravel.”

Thankfully, Jane learned to love herself and others, and today she’s married to her longtime partner, Jennifer Cheyne. The couple actually first met in the early ’00s, but they reconnected after Jane’s divorce from her first wife. The couple tied the knot in 2021, and Lynch has stated that “[We] fell back together so easily and lovingly. We’re very different people now — we don’t have the same insecurities we used to have. We live very peacefully.”

Gary Janetti and Brad Goreski

Gary Janetti and Brad Goreski are both powerhouses in their fields. Gary is an international television writer known for his work on the likes of Will & Grace, Family Guy, and The Prince, and Brad Goreski has made a name for himself as a fashion stylist and television personality. Separately, they are icons – but together they’re even better.

This couple married in 2017 after a whopping 16 years of dating, and it seems as though they didn’t mind the wait. When they got engaged, Goreski told E! that “I’m really excited to marry the man I love. It’s a great thing. I never thought that that would be a possibility. It’s such a cool thing.” Now, the couple shares insights into their married life on social media for all of their fans to see.

Todd Spiewak and Jim Parsons

Jim Parsons will forever be remembered for his role as Sheldon Cooper in the outstanding comedy show, The Big Bang Theory. And while he married Amy Farrah Fowler on our screens, in real life he’s married to art director Todd Spiewak. In fact, they have been together since the late 1990s – and nobody realized until 2012. We didn’t even know that he was gay.

The news came out in a New York Times article in 2012 when Parsons confirmed that he was gay and that he had been in a relationship for the past decade, and that he’d even proposed to his partner. They married in 2017, and Parsons has spoken out about their marriage, stating that it’s “an act of love, coffee in the morning, going to work, washing the clothes, taking the dogs out – a regular life, boring love.”
